Our Story

Modular Milkcrate Garden

We built a labyrinth, took it to a public art festival on Roosevelt Island (Figment), and are now hosting pollinator plants on the roof of Prime Produce’s Guild for Good in Hell’s Kitchen. Last Fall, New Yorkers for Parks provided us with daffodil bulbs, which were planted in our milk crate planters with the intention of creating a modular daffodil field in front of the building. The daffodils sprouted and bloomed, so we brought them down to share with the neighborhood.

COVID-19

This COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to re-think many of our garden plans. In 2020, we went back to an idea that we have been mulling over since we first started using these milk crate planters: creating a distributed community garden where folks can host a tiny piece of a community garden on their fire escape or in a sunny spot in their living room or wherever else they might be able to squeeze a tiny plot of life. No time like the present.

Tiny Plots

We invite you to adopt a crate, take it home, and join our community garden. If you provide us with a mailing address (the form is listed below), we will send you a packet of seeds to plant and provide access to garden experts and other gardeners who can help you keep your plot lively. We’d love for you to share your stories with us and help to stitch together diverse New Yorkers who endeavor to grow a little goodness wherever they can. One note: watch out, the crate is meant for outdoor planting so, if you are using it inside, you’ll need a tray under the crate.
